DIY, freelancer or agency: choosing a website route for a Malaysian SME

We compare building it yourself, hiring a freelancer and hiring an agency, so you can pick the route that fits your business and budget.

For a Malaysian SME, a website is no longer optional. The harder question is who builds it. Here are the three usual routes, with the trade-offs of each, and how we fit between them.

1. Build it yourself (Wix, Squarespace)

You use an online site builder and do the work yourself.

  • For: the cheapest and fastest start. A simple site can be live in a weekend for a low monthly fee.
  • Against: templates make sites look alike, search performance is often limited, and the biggest cost is your own time.

Best for: testing an idea on a small budget.

2. Hire a freelancer

One independent person builds your site.

  • For: usually cheaper than an agency, and you talk straight to the person doing the work.
  • Against: few people are equally strong at design and code, so you may get a site that looks good but works poorly, or the reverse. Long-term support depends on one person's availability.

Best for: a clear, simple project, with a freelancer who has proven work in both design and build.

3. Hire an agency

A company with designers, developers, project managers and marketers.

  • For: a full team and a structured process.
  • Against: office and staff overheads are passed on to you, and messages often travel through account managers, which slows decisions.

Best for: large companies with complex needs and large budgets.

Where we fit

We're one small team that covers strategy, design and code. You talk directly to the people building your site, the scope and price are fixed before you pay, and the launch date is set from the day we have your content. For most SMEs, that's the useful middle ground: agency-level process at a price closer to a freelancer's.
